Writing is a quite comprehensive language practice; it plays a significant role in the five basic skills in English learning which are listening, speaking, writing, reading, and translating. For a long time, the teachers have been doing a lot of researches on improving English writing teaching. Plenty of achievements have been achieved; however, there are still some problems unsolved. At present, the teaching methods in China has focused on every phase of teachers’ teaching methods, students’learning ways, the evaluation of writing and the forming of thinking patterns of target language. All these efforts have improved students writing level to some extent, however, the affective factors in students’avoidance phenomenon in student’s writing have been neglected. This study tries to analyze the affective factors in avoidance phenomenon in students’ writing, finding out the causes of avoidance phenomenon, then helping teachers to provide effective assistance to students.Data of this study are mainly collected from the actual writing of the subjects in two examinations. The subjects of this study are senior high school students from No.1Middle School of Chibi, Hubei province. No.1Middle School is a provincial demonstration school in Hubei. And the supplemental instruments are questionnaire and interview. The first question of this questionnaire is designed to investigate the major cause of avoidance phenomenon in English writing in senior middle school. The second question is an editing version of Tarone’s classification of the discourse function of communication strategy which shows that when facing difficulties of expression, different students take various measures.The two research questions addressed in the present study are stated as follows:1. What are the avoidance phenomena in English writing in senior high school?2. What are the reasons that lead to these avoidance phenomena?Findings of the study can be summarized as follows:1. The avoidance phenomena in English writing in senior high school are:avoidance of vocabulary; avoidance of grammar; avoidance of discourse.2. The reasons that lead to these avoidance phenomena are:vocabulary deficiency; the negative effect of non-intelligent factors; the interference of native language and so forth.Based on these findings, the thesis tries to put forward some suggestions for reducing the appearance of avoidance in English writing so as to help students improve their English writing level.1. The teacher should help students to get rid of the "emotional obstacles", taking advantage of the non-intelligent factors;2. In teaching, besides the text books, the teacher should provide sufficient input for the students in accordance with the practical situations;3. The teacher can encourage students to enlarge the output by various means, such as strengthening the training of sentence transformation, dictation, rewriting;4. The teacher should improve students’knowledge of English culture, and help them get used to think in English;5. Besides, the teacher should try to improve the evaluation methods, and responsibly pay attention to every writing of students.
