As we all know that the oral communicative approach is used as one of the mostimportant teaching approaches in China currently, which is widely applied by theEnglish teachers. Through the introduction of the definition and background, we can usethe similar conceptions such as The Functional Approach, the Notional Approach, andthe Functional-Notional Approach to describe it. All of them take sociolinguistics andpsycholinguistics as the basic theoretical support, and consider the phatic function as theplatform. In1970s, the oral communicative approach was introduced into our country.Li Xiaoju thinks the communicative competence contains linguistic capacity, discoursecompetence and pragmatic competence, which are related and influenced each other.Wen Qiufang has already proposed the mode of intercultural communicative abilityincluding the sensibility and understanding of culture difference, as well as theflexibility of treat the differences. The goal of new curriculum standards of seniorEnglish in China (2003) is to develop students’ integrated language skills.This dissertation has already employed the following research approaches, i.e.interview, case study, questionnaire, data analysis and research control. During theinterview and case study, it is obvious that senior students in Chongqing are not good atspeaking English to communicate. In fact, communicative approach is invented forimproving oral communicative ability. The purpose of the thesis is to find the problemin students’ oral communicative ability, explore and analyze the reasons and applycommunicative approach to the English teaching to improve students’ communicativeability.To the whole research, first, the interview and case studies of the practical classesare carried out and the results show the level of the communicative ability is directlyrelated to whether the oral communicative approach is used or not. Second, through thequestionnaire and data analysis from English teachers in Nankai High School, thereasons have been discovered. Then a series of measures are taken out. At last, a pair ofcomparing experiments has been conducted for3months. It proved communicativeapproach is the effective way to improve students’ communicative ability by contrastingthe listening and speaking ability of students between experimental class A and controlclass B.
