English, as a world language, is becoming increasingly important. English writinghas been drawing more and more attention both at home and abroad. However, there isurgent need for reform in both theory and practice.Cohesion theory came to the world with the publication of cohesion in English byHalliday and Hasan in1976. After that, many an expert became interested in the theoryand gradually formulated their ideas in various ways.The paper tries to apply the cohesion theory to everyday English teaching in theform of empirical study. By doing so, the author hopes to better English writing in asignificant manner.To conduct the experiment, the author has done a lot of preparatory work byinterviewing the students and giving away questionnaire. In the experimental period,the author firstly focuses on theory teaching by listing different examples of incorrectuse. Secondly, the author analyses many examples from E-C translation and writing.Thirdly, the author encourages the students to do their own writing.The author keeps a record of the wrong use of cohesive devices before and after thespecial experiment so as to test the efficiency of experiment. Actually, the experimentworks well.The paper also explores the various causes about the cohesion failure and putsforward many possible solutions for discussion.
