So far, there has been abundant research on the correlation between social andeconomic status of the student’s family and their academic achievements, yet theresults might not be applicable to the reality in China. As the economy and societydevelop and reform, it is necessary to understand the social and economic status of thestudent’s family in Guangzhou, in order to refine the feasibility and focus ofeducation.Based on the related research in China and abroad, this quantitative study investigatesthe correlation between social and economic status of the high school student’s familyand their academic achievements by analyzing402samples in SPSS19.0. Thesamples were randomly chosen from the junior and senior high school graduates in aschool in Guangzhou,2011. A survey of questionnaires and their profiles wasconducted. The collected data was analyzed with four methods, including descriptiveanalysis, analysis of variance, correlation analysis and regression analysis.The results show that the social and economic status of the senior high schoolstudents’ family lies at medium level while that of the junior students’ family is a littlehigher. Students of higher social and economic status achieve significantly better inacademic performance. The higher level of the income is, the greater the academicachievement appears. The education level of the mother has significantly positivecorrelation to the academic achievement of senior high school students. Englishscores are also positively correlated to the social and economic status of the students’family.This study aims at providing reference and evidence for authorities to plan schemesfor family-school cooperation and English study improvement.
