The evolution from the traditional mobile phone to the smart phone has enabled its users to possess a lot of new characteristics in use and gratification. This paper adopts the theories of use and gratification in communication studies to analyze the survey data of the smart phone usage from Shanghai college students. According to the use and gratification theory research ideas, this paper describes the basic behaviors of smart phone usage and illustrates the use demands of smart phone for Shanghai college students through a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews. Due to the unique characteristic of smart phone, although the connotation of the gratification has been extended, the personal identity is disappearing compared with traditional media when college students are using smart phone. We can find out that the communication function of the mobile phone is being diluted based on the researches on use and gratification of the smart phone of college students.
