At present,Chinese society is experiencing an austere situation on the developing of population. It is getting to be the main tendency in modern society of China that the rapid aging of people’s structure companied with a declining birthrate. The family size has become gradually smaller and nucleus family is becoming the major form of modern Chinese families, especially under the control of the family planning policy. As a result, the dependency ratio of labor force is growing and they are facing an increasing stress of providing for the aged family members.Against this background, there are growing demands for adjusting the existing family planning policy and promising a second child. Many experts and scholars think them as important ways to relieve stresses in providing for the old. But even some others reject such ways and they doubt about their influences on caring for the aged. It is a good angle for us to search for the possibility of "more happiness comes form more offsprings" in actuality. This paper is based on the data of a research about the living conditions of the elderly in Yichang. I set up the index system by choosing some questions from the questionnaire, and then proposed four hypotheses. I address previous research, suggesting that’ more happiness comes with more offsprings’ is still reasonable nowadays. As there are probably huge differences due to the dual structures of urban and rural development, I examined the hypotheses separately by urban and rural areas.By analyzing these data, this paper presents the main point are as follows:Firstly, I found evidence that can support the hypotheses that’ more happiness comes from more offsprings’. The old people with more children weren’t living better lives--not more money, not better physical and mental conditions, and not higher life satisfaction rating--neither in urban area or in rural area. As a result, it is not possible for our society to relieve it’s pressure by increasing the number of child.Secondly,we should examine the factors why more children didn’t lead to a better living conditions of their elderly parents on the basis of the supply and demand structure of living resource. There are correlation between children’s supports and the old persons’ demands. Meanwhile, there is a complementary effect between different subjects in providing the resources for the old. Finally, we find a tendency that family as one of the three main bodies in elderly care is playing a less important role now. The so-called ’back home’ and lifting the restrictions of family planning policy to seems to relieve stress on providing for the aged seems be untenable. Instead, a comprehensive social security system is more reasonable.
