Objective:To observe the effects of Maca and Tongkat Ali on promoting serumtestosterone level, and probe into the possible mechanism primarily by animalexperiment.Methods:Forty eight8-week old SPF male SD rats were divided into4groupsrandomly: sedentary control group (S group), exercising control group (Egroup),exercising plus MACA group(EM group).The two kinds of medicine used inthe experiment were detected in the National Stimulant and Sports Nutrition TestingCenter and did not contain banned substances.Each exercising group rats experienced6-week exhausted swimming training with load,once a day,six days per week.Serumtestosterone(T),cortiso(lC),luteinizing hormone(LH),follicle stimulating hormone(FSH)concentration of all rats were measured through ELISAmethod,and the Hb wasmeasured by Automatic Blood Cell Analyzer after6-week experiment.The swimmingexhausted time of E group EM group and ET group rats were also measured at the endof the experiment.Results:(1)The serum testosterone concentration of E group rats was notably(P<0.05)lower than that of S group;(2)The swimming exhausted time of EM and ETgroup was longer than that of E group(P<0.05);(3)The Hb concentration of EM andET group were respectively2.46%and1.31%higher than that of E group;(4)Theserum T,LH,FSH concentration and T/C of EM group were respectively20.50%,22.95%,106.03%and17.81%higher than that of E group,and the difference of FSHbetween these two groups was significant(P<0.05);the serum C concentration of EMgroup was4.87%lower than that of E group;(5)The serum T,LH,FSH concentrationand T/C of ET group were respectively26.59%,5.32%,15.88%and53.97%higher thanthat of E group;the serum C concentration of ET group was14.59%lower than that of E group.Conclusions:(1)Six-week exhausting swimming training could cause remarkabledecline of serum T level of the rats;(2)Maca and Tongkat Ali could enhance theendurance exercise capacity of rats remarkably;(3)Maca and Tongkat Ali couldimprove the exercise-induced lower serum T level condition effectively.(4)Thepromoting testosterone effect of Tongkat Ali was better than Maca.
