At present, more and more college students are suffering from mental disease tovarious degrees, with the study load getting heavier and heavier and facing intensesocial competition. Therefore, to strengthen their mental capacity and to promote thedevelopment of their physical self-esteem has become an important task for the wholesociety. What’s more, the two most recent physical monitoring reports, released byState Sport General Administration and Ministry of Education, shows that physicalquality and motor ability of Chinese youth continued to decline, with the physicalfitness index falling by9.65%. Through those two reports, it is not hard to find out that, among students of all age groups, the body mass indexes such as, lung capacity, speed, explosive force, strength endurance and endurance have decreased significantly.Students’ physical quality and function level is gradually decreasing instead ofincreasing with the age.Physical self-esteem has become one of the hottest research points in westernexercise psychology, due to its importance in studying the psychological antecedentsand benefits of physical exercise participants. And the change in physical self-esteemcan also cause that of the overall level of self-esteem in the same direction. Domesticpsychological scholars have already begun to study the factors affecting physicalself-esteem and the impacts of physical self-esteem on the individual development. Butamong all those researches concerning physical self-esteem at home and abroad,Taekwondo was seldom chosen as a means of intervention, which, to some extent, alsoprovides the room for further study.Through literature review, questionnaire investigation, experiments, and mathanalysis, the author analyzes the physical and psychological performances of studentswho selected Taekwondo classes in Dalian University of Foreign Languages for onesemester. The research shows result as the following. First, Taekwondo exercises havehelped students to improve physical quality significantly. Second, Taekwondo practicehas enhanced students’ physical self-esteem greatly, showing a significant difference.Last but not the least, there is a positive correlation between physical quality andphysical self-esteem. Through Taekwondo practice, all students with enhancement inphysical self-esteem also experience that in physical quality and vice versa.Based on the results above, the author makes the following reasonable suggestions on the content and teaching method of Taekwondo elective course incollege. First, the physical quality development of students should be included in theevaluation in order to monitor the effect of the course on improving physical fitness ofstudents. In the mean time, lower the technical evaluation scores in Taekwondo classso as to enhance students’ enthusiasm for training. Second, in Taekwondo electivecourse, more contents and requirements concerning increasing students’ physicalquality should be added. Exercise Prescription Teaching could be used to deal withindividual differences among students, in order to develop effective means to improvethe physical quality of different students. Third, teachers should pay more attention toquality aspects of development in teaching, and continue to improve their physicalfitness, so as to provide favorable conditions for students to improve physicalself-esteem. The last but not the least, teachers should assess the test result of eachstudent and give feedback to him or her, so that students may know their level andmake an objective evaluation of their bodies.
