A Study On Reading Strategies Tested In Middle School English Reading Comprehension Tests

During the process of English language learning, reading is the main way to obtainlanguage knowledge and information and the key method of improving an individual person’slanguage using abilities. The usage of reading strategies can help learners improve theirreading comprehension abilities effectively. Besides testing the students’ language knowledgeand background knowledge, reading comprehension tests concentrate on examining thestudents’ English reading comprehension abilities. That is to say, students are able to useEnglish reading strategies correctly and effectively to improve reading efficiency and achievetheir reading abilities. So during the process of reading comprehension teaching, teachersshould aim at teaching students reading comprehension strategies and try to make studentsuse proper reading strategies consciously, especially to help students understand the passagesbetter and finish the reading tasks by using reading strategies properly. At last, the main aim isto help students develop good reading habits, improve their reading abilities and Englishlanguage learning.Through investigation, this paper mainly studies the current situation of middle schoolEnglish reading comprehension tests, the reading strategies that teachers teach in everydayclass and the situation of middle school students using English reading strategies. Byanswering the questions such as "What English reading strategies are tested in the juniormiddle school English reading comprehension tests? What reading strategies should bespecially taught? How should the teachers do to help students to learn and use the properreading comprehension strategies according to the reading materials?" and combining withrelevant research and analysis, the paper tries to explore the correct ways of developingreading strategies which are suitable for junior middle school students’ English readinglearning in order to make teachers pay attention to English reading comprehension teachingconsciously. For teachers, the main aims are to help students understand and use readingcomprehension strategies properly and do with the reading tasks correctly. So the studiesconcentrate on how to guide the teachers’ teaching reading comprehension more effectivelyand cultivate the students’ reading ability.The following questions are mainly discussed in the studies:1. What English reading strategies are tested in the junior middle school English readingcomprehension tests? 2. What reading strategies should be specially taught by teachers?3. How should the teachers do to help students to learn and use the proper readingcomprehension strategies according to the reading materials?The research object of the studies is mainly to the students in Grade four from thewriter’s own middle school as the main body, combining with the students’ overallachievement and English scores and other aspects of English reading comprehensionachievement, we have a comprehensive analysis. At last, we use convenient samplingmethods of the school system to choose100students from Grade four as the student researchobjects, and then the English teachers from the writer’s middle school (a total of21people) asthe teacher research objects.The studies are to investigate the situations of middle school English readingcomprehension tests, the situations of the students mastering and using English readingstrategies and how the reading strategies are taught by the English teachers in the classroom.The original data of the research is collected by analyzing the English reading comprehensionexamination paper of2012in Yantai, the questionnaires of students’ and teachers’, theclassroom observations and interviewing about several students and teachers. Through theinvestigation and analysis, the results show that:1. In recent years, the reading materials in the reading comprehension tests are usuallyincluding different subjects and different kinds of the passages. The tests can check students’present ability of reading and reading levels. Reading comprehension tests focus on thetesting of reading strategies including guessing meaning according to the context, skimming,scanning, inferring, summary, etc.2. Testing of reading strategies in reading comprehension rests has an influence on theteachers’ teaching. It makes teachers increase emphasis on reading strategies teaching ineveryday English class and change more concepts of reading comprehension teaching thanbefore. It also helps teachers to pay more attention to the cultivation of students’ ability to usereading strategies. What’s more, adopting the task-based teaching methods has beendeveloped into class teaching models.3. Testing of reading strategies in reading comprehension rests has an influence on thestudents’ learning. It makes students increase the emphasis on English reading and readingstrategies in the daily English learning process. According to the survey in the paper, more and more students want to learn effective reading strategies, which can help them to obtainbetter results through the appropriate use of reading strategies in reading tests. So the studentshave much higher enthusiasm on the study of reading strategies.
