| As the Second largest private publishing house during the Republic of China, Zhonghua Book Company occupied an important position in the history of Chinese modern publishing. Since1912to1949, Zhonghua Book Company not only published textbook, academic books, ancient books and magazines to provide readers with a wealth of spiritual nourishment, but also published a considerable number of dictionaries which greatly promoted the modernization of dictionaries and the development of modern culture and education.In order to explore the history of dictionaries publishing of Zhonghua Book Company, this thesis divides the history of its dictionaries publishing into three stages, introduces its representative dictionaries and dictionary publishers. Then, it analyzes the characteristics of its dictionaries publishing. Especially, this thesis discussed the competition of dictionaries publishing between Zhonghua Book Company and the Commercial Press. And finally, the contributions and enlightenment of dictionaries publishing are summarized.This thesis includes the following eight parts.The first part is the preface. It introduces the origin of the topic, the research value, the current research status, and also clarifies the basic idea, the methods and the innovations of the research.The second part comes to the influencing factors of Zhonghua Book Company’s dictionaries publishing, which include external causes such as cultural and educational needs and internal reasons such as human and material resources.The third part gets an overview of Zhonghua Book Company’s dictionaries publishing. This part divides the history of its dictionaries publishing into three parts: the initial period (1912~1919), the prosperity period (1919~1937) and the difficult period (1937~1949), then chooses some representative dictionaries to introduce.The fourth part is the introduction of the dictionary publishers in Zhonghua Book Company. Through the research on famous publisher Lufei Kui and Shu Xincheng, this part demonstrates their concept and practices of dictionaries publishing.The fifth part is the characteristics of Zhonghua Book Company’s dictionaries publishing. These characteristics can be understood as the diversity of the dictionaries, the modernity of the dictionaries, the innovation of the dictionaries and so on.The sixth part is the dictionaries competition between Zhonghua Book Company and the Commercial Press. This part extracts the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the two publishing houses on the basis of comparative analysis, and then summarizes the effects of the competition which include gathering talents, improving quality of dictionaries and prospering the market of dictionaries.The seventh part is the historical contributions of Zhonghua Book Company’s dictionaries publishing. Here the author sums up its contributions to compilation of dictionaries as well as modern culture and education.The last part is the conclusion. Through the study of above content, the author summarizes some useful enlightenment to today’s dictionaries publishing and competition. |
