Phased-array radars can be widely applied in military, spaceflight, weather forecast, communications, and so on. The phase shifters, which are hearts of phased-array radars, are used to control the phases of antenna array signals. In this paper, we will study the designation and the manufacture-arts of the S-band four-bit phase shifter.The phase shifter is the key part of the T/R module in an phased-array radar, whose precisions, costs, sizes and weight are strictly confined. An shifter phase with the characters of small volume, light weight, low cost, great performance can meet the requirement of the development. In this paper, we will report a S-band four-bit phase shifter which adopting MCM technic, when compared to the phase shifter with the HIC technic, whose volume is reduced to2/3and weight is reduced to1/2.First, we discussed the basic principle of all the kind of the micro-strip digital phase shifter; then integrating the craftwork, we discussed the switched-line phase shifter in particular. We analyzed the causations which make for the insertion loss of the phase shifter, and optimized the design in emulator, and we build the models of the PIN diodes, the inductances, the capacitances, the spun gold, the gold belt with the considering of encapsulations.First, we adopted the maturation process, MCM_D+Multilayer film of Polyimide technics, to design the phase shifter. We started with the discussion of the micro-strip transmission line, and then the designation and simulation of the inductances, and the reliability study of the MCM_D technics, and at last the testing and analyzing of the phase shifter.Following the above process, we made another designation with the process of MCM-C LTCC. In the design, we chose the Ferro-A6S as the material of the substrate, and through a lot of experiments, we reached the S-band four-bit phase shifter module, whose Performance index all meet the requirement. The module has a high practical level, and a high technical level in internal.
