As an important part of the national transport, rail transport plays an increasingly important role in people’s daily lives. In recent years, the development of rail transport is very rapid, heavier duty, higher density, faster running are its current development trend. A direct question brought by the rapid development is to protect the safety of rail transport. Rail as an equipment which direct carrying the train, the states plays an important role for the train whether run safely. Therefore, the detection of rail wear becomes an important work of rail detection departments, and rail head wear situation is a main indicator to measures the rail can be used normally.At present, the primary means of rail head wear detection in domestic is manual calipers, but this method is low efficiency, heavy workload, and the measured data is not easy to deal with and analysis. In this dissertation, the design of the train rail wear machine vision measurement system which is a non-contact measurement method can solve these problems well.This project completed the design of the field measuring car, the required hardware equipment, including a CCD(Charge-coupled Device), laser, a computer motherboard, a battery are loaded into the car. More importantly, system software design, including on-site measurement software systems and data analysis system, are also completed. The rail section laser image collected by CCD is transferred to the computer, after image processing, the image becomes a single-pixel curve image, and then compared with the theoretical curve, and the vertical wear and side wear values will be computed. Detection methods include both automatic and manual, and the automatic one is controlling CCD spacing images acquisition through the mileage information. The wear value is real-time displaying on the measurement software interface, and we can also view the current processed rail curve. Meanwhile, the system automatically saves processed image information, as well as wear information, and we can be able to look over and analysis the saved data, including the single image information, the whole wear data, and print report and other functions by data analysis software. According to large number of field experiments, we have found many factors which affect the measurement system accuracy, and a lot of works have been done to improve it. Laser lock-in imaging is used to eliminate the interference of external light, noise processing can make obtained curve smoother. To make the measurement system more convenient to use in the wild, we have developed the button panel, and improved the system’s hardware design to make site operation more convenient and more humane. Experimental data show that the system has good reliability and stability to meet the testing requirements of the relevant inspection department, and it has passed the technical appraisal of the rail inspection department.
