Ethernet is entering the industrial control field with the advantage of low-cost and widely supported, known as industrial Ethernet (IE). Industrial Ethernet should be compatible with standard Ethernet and meet the real-time requirement of industrial control system. At present, several different real-time Industrial Ethernet solutions have been proposed, and they share two same points:for compatibility, IE keep compliant with IEEE802.3protocol in PHY layer and MAC layer; to improve real-time performance, hardware assisted IEEE-1588implementation is employed as clock synchronization solution.This thesis focuses on the design of an IEEE802.3compliant, IEEE1588v2support MAC core that can be used in real-time industrial Ethernet solutions. Specifically, the thesis discusses the following contents:Firstly, the thesis gives a brief overview of the existing real-time industrial Ethernet solutions, and analyzes the necessity and feasibility of the IEEE1588support MAC core.Secondly, the thesis discusses the MAC layer related part of IEEE802.3protocol at length, and analyzes the clock synchronization principle and the factors contributing to clock synchronization precision based on IEEE1588v2. Several hardware clock solutions are also presented in this part.Thirdly, this thesis proposes the overview architecture of the real-time industrial Ethernet MAC, and presents the implementation of each sub-module in detail.Finally, this thesis presents the verification and test of the MAC. Wishbone bus behavioral model and PHY chip behavioral model are introduced to implement the RTL level verification. The test platform includes a PC running sniffer and a FPGA development board with cyclone III FPGA and PHY chip. The test results show that the proposed MAC core supports IEEE1588protocol and can communicate with PC successfully.
