Ridge waveguide is used extensively because of its wide single-mode bandwidth, more longer main mode Cutoff wavelength, relatively small size and relatively low characteristic impedance by contrast with regular waveguide.This paper presents the basic properties of single and double ridge waveguide extensively, including Cutoff wavelength, bandwidth, characteristic impedance, attenuation, power handling and field distribution, and introduces other kinds of ridge waveguide, provides many closed-form equations and a great deal of charts and tables, which can be used in engineering design conveniently, presents a new method of designing the geometry of ridge waveguide for special request. The coupled wave theory is studied thoroughly, the design methods of ridge waveguide cross-guide directional couplers and multi-aperture directional couplers are provided according to the coupled wave theory and the properties of ridge waveguide, the superimposed array theory which is suitable for ridge waveguide multi-aperture directional couplers is provided according to its particularity. Many engineering examples are devised to testify the theory, the experiment results are in contrast with the simulation results, and they are in good agreement. Many valuable conclusions in this paper are instructional for engineering design.
