The Internet of Things is a network that achieves all covered by IP. The Internet ofthings contains a big variety of communication technology, not just one or twotechnologies. Due to the advantages of low-power, low-cost and large-capacity, ZigBeetechnology becomes the default way to solve Wireless Personal Area Network portion ofInternet of Things. And ZigBee technology is widely used in smart home, intelligentmedical, industrial automation and other scenarios. Today, consumption of energyresources has become a global problem, and the core advantage of ZigBee technology islow-power. Although a lot of methods have been taken for ZigBee technology to reduceenergy consumption, the research results show there is still much room for improvementregarding energy consumption. ZigBee network layer is the core of ZigBee protocol.However, research on ZigBee network layer is just beginning. The standard has constantlybeen modified and completed. Therefore, many scholars carry out investigations onZigBee routing algorithms to optimize routing and reduce power consumption. It has agreat theoretical basis for the application and development of Internet of Things.The paper focuses on the research of ZigBee network layer based on the analysis ofZigBee technology’s protocol framework. The paper researches on the process ofnetworking, network characteristics, and routing mechanism of ZigBee technology.Although ZigBee routing algorithm is a hybrid routing algorithm that combines AODVjrand Cluster-Tree routing algorithms, it fails to well combine and balance AODVjr andCluster-Tree routing algorithms. ZigBee technology does not set the correspondingparameters and design methods. The route discovery process will generate a large numberof redundant routing control packets. Therefore, this paper proposes a cluster-based,routing and energy optimization algorithm named CLZBR. CLZBR algorithm will reduceredundancy packet and energy consumption of network, and extend the life of network.The creative work of the whole paper includes these aspects: The paper analyses theresearch situations and problems of ZigBee network routing, and proposes a cluster-based,routing and energy optimization algorithm named CLZBR. The paper researches on the routing mechanism of ZigBee technology, including distributed address assignment,network routing algorithm and routing process. The paper focuses on CLZBR routingalgorithm and divides the network into several logical clusters. CLZBR algorithm will wellcombine the advantages of AODVjr and Cluster-Tree routing algorithms by employingAODVjr and Cluster-Tree routing algorithms respectively between clusters and withinclusters. CLZBR algorithm also calculates the address of destination nodes’parents toreduce redundancy of RREQ packets and energy consumption of network. CLZBRalgorithm uses alternate nodes to replace the clusterheads to guarantee network stabilityand extend the life of network when the clusterheads’ energy are abnormally low. Finally,the paper researches on the working principle and simulation process of NS2simulationsoftware. The paper achieves the simulation platform of ZigBee network’s routing basedon the modules of IEEE802.15.4physical layer and MAC layer. CLZBR and ZigBeerouting algorithms are dynamic simulated and data analyzed by writing OTcl script filesand setting the experimental scenarios. The paper compares and analyses the performanceof CLZBR and ZigBee routing algorithms in packet delivery ratio, routing overhead ratioand remaining energy ratio.
