The diameter of the viscose filament and the number of broken filamentare two important standards to determine the quality of viscose filament.The uneven thickness of viscose filament is bound to cause uneven fabricdyeing, thus affecting the quality of the follow-up products; and thenumber of broken filament directly impact on the quality and grade of thefinished yarn. Therefore,the real-time diameter measurement and brokenfilament detection have a very big practical significance.In thispaper,we deeply analyzed and compared the domestic and foreign methodsof diameter measurement and broken filament detection.According to theresults of our own experiments, a method of diameter measurement andbroken filament detection was presented. If this method can be appliedto actual production, it will greatly enhance the effectiveness andquality of products of the chemical fiber enterprises, will contributeto the development of chemical fiber industry.In this paper,we analyzed and compared the methods of diametermeasurement and broken filament detection,then choosed the photoelectricdetection method based on non-contact laser diffraction. We handleddiffraction image by means of digital image processing, so as to achievethe purpose of diameter measurement and broken filament detection.Firstly, a laser light source irradiate the viscose filament, accordingto the Babinet principle, viscose filament was equaled to seam;secondlywe used the normal area CCD to receive diffraction images;at last,by themeans of digital image processing,we analyzed and handled the datas of diffraction image, and finally achieved our goals. In the process ofdigital image processing, we used the image enhancement,just like:gradation transformation, histogram correction, spatial filtering,frequency domain enhancement, the wavelet transform. We brieflyintroduced the principle of these methods,as well as several methods wereused in the process of subsequent image enhancement.In this paper we designed a system of diameter measurement and brokenfilament detection based on laser diffraction and digital imageprocessing, then we handled diffraction images obtained through practicalexperiments. The result of image processing showed that the design andoperation is very stable, this system’s structure is simple and its priceis low,so this system has the potential to be applied to the actualproduction, so we can achieve the desired design goals.
