Due to the notable influence of atmospheric effects and the objects’ relative motion, the communication laser beam’s Acquisition, Pointing and Tracking (APT) techniquebased on the traditional mechanical methods such as stepping motor or galvanometercannot meet the demand of the mobile especially the fast mobile terrestrialFree-space-optical Communication (FSO).In this paper, two kinds of optical smart antenna systems are designed. Themethods of optical smart antenna’s the array element distributing and the beam controlare in-depth studied. One of the optical smart antenna systems is applicable to the situation of the twocommunicators almost in the same plane. These are researched such as the shape of theantenna, the distribution and size of transmitting and receiving units, the control ofrotation beam, and the communication protocol, etc. Simulations have been done aboutthe acquisition time, the ratio of communication time to interrupt time, the bandwidthand so on in the real application. The results show that this antenna system has thecharacteristics of fast pointing and tracking, strong adaptability, high reliability and soon. It is very suitable for the fast mobile Free-space-optical Communication. The other is an optical smart antenna system which is applicable to all directions. This paper researches and analyzes the selection of the antenna’s shape, thedetermination of the size of the transmitting and receiving units, the distributing of thearray element, and the control of beam forming are all analyzed theoretically. This canprovide reference for the realization and design of the all-direction optical smart antennasystem.
