With the explosive development of wireless communication, it becomes more and more discord within the society and environment. The problems of geometrical growth of its consumption energy and low efficiency have become increasingly evident. To reduce the environmental impact of the communication industry, green communication has achieved more attention from academia and industry. There are few researches on the efficient criterion of green communication. However, a specific metrics for green communication is conducive to assess the green technologies and qualify the gained benefit of resources. This paper will research on the green efficiency (GE) criterion of wireless communication networks and its application in cellular network planning. Firstly, profit is defined as the achieved bits that pass through a certain distance. The concept of green efficiency will be proposed based on the joint optimization of the time-frequency-energy-space-code resources. Thus, a simple but practical GE factor, i.e.(b-m)/s/Hz/W, is provided. Secondly, we analyze the relationship between the efficiencies,(b-m)/s/Hz/W GE and other existing efficiency, and the transmission distance or transmit power. A method of applying adaptive modulation to approach the upper bound of the efficiencies is proposed. The simulation results show that the proposed GE exists the optimal transmission distance and transmit power. Finally, the application of efficiency in cellular network planning is studied by using both theoretical analyze and simulation which shows that GE can obtain a good tradeoff between b/s/Hz/W power efficiency and cell radius.
