Recently we observe wide use of P2P applications of which traffic shows different statisticalcharacteristics compared with traditional Internet applications. The growth of P2P traffic has aremarkable impact on traditional communications networks. However, the P2P technology can be areasonable solution to some bottleneck issues of traditional network technology.Firstly, this paper pays attention to the future trends of P2P technology and disscusses itsimpact on LAN, WAN and Backbone networks. According to the analysis, the impact of P2Pservice on the entire network performance mostly depends on whether the access network canefficiently support P2P service or not. Secondly, the paper focuses on the characteristics of the P2Ptraffic in access network by analyzing and establishing the P2P traffic modle with OPNETsimulation software. The results show that traditional EPON is not able to support local P2P trafficefficiently.A new scheme of P2P optimization in EPON is proposed. Though extending LLID and itsfiltration regulations of MPCP protocol, local P2P packets can be sent back to download withoutexchanging MAC address by OLT, and the QoS of P2P service is improved greatly without impacton the QoS of other services. Based on this scheme, the paper makes a further improvement to localP2P service of EPON by setting P2P queue in ONU and P2P timeslot in DBA, which achieves localP2P packets’ transmission without E/O and O/E. Finally, the results of modeling and simulation onthis two schemes with OPNET illustrate that EPON can support local P2P service more efficientlycompared with other traditional methodologies.P2P video stream has gained tremendous popularityand is expected to vastly increase in the next few years. The paper proposes a new architecture ofEPON which can support P2P video efficiently and release the processing pressure in OLT byreflecting local P2P packets to downstream at ODN with Star Coupler. The new architecture can beimplemented in Next-Generation PONs easily.
