With the rapid development of the Internet technologies, the network scale expands explosively, the new service demands appear continually, while multi-network convergence has become an inevitable trend of the future network technologies. Multi-network gateway offers an excellent choice for the internetworking of heterogeneous network, which has used the network processor hardware platform, not only overcomes the shortcomings of poor flexibility of the ASIC chip, but also has high processing performance of line-speed forwarding. Simultaneously, the ATM technology is still widely used in the special network by its high reliability and strong switching capacity, and the integration of IP and ATM is an important aspect of multi-network convergence. Therefore, it is of great significance that studies IP/ATM Adaptation and forwarding technologies in the multi-network gateway.Sponsored by the project of the Research on the key technologies of multi-net gateway and its prototype", this dissertation firstly reviews the hardware implementation scheme of the multi-network gateway, and then outlined the hardware architecture of IXP2350network processor, the Software Portability Framework and the AAL5principle.The emphasis of this dissertation is on the detailed design and implementation of the functions of IP/ATM Adaptation and Forwarding in the Multi-net gateway. Subsequently, we carry on simulation and hardware test to it with the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) Workbench. Finally, this dissertation proposes and implements an adaptive forwarding technology which is suitable for the special network, and the design scheme has passed the hardware test in multi-network gateway. Based on the all-around analysis of the performance of the program, the thesis proposes a theory of active multilayer adaptive forwarding technologies in multi-network gateway.
