With the vigorous development of the Internet, wireless communication technology, the processing power of the mobile terminal and emerging network applications, people’s capability of processing message is improved. In order to improve work efficiency, as well as the processing of information anytime, anywhere, people put forward higher requirements of mobile communications and the Internet business. Therefore it is necessary to add support for mobility to the next generation network protocol which is IPv6. As a fairly good protocol, IPv4has been widely used in the past few years and regarded as the standard of traditional Internet communication, but with the evolution of the rapid development of information technology, IPv4gradually exposes it’s lacking of address space, support for security and support for mobility. In view of the above reasons, since1991, IETF started to develop a new network protocol, and in1995published IPv6technical specifications in RFC2460which is a detailed description of the IPv6protocol. Compared with the IPv4protocol, the IPv6protocol has the following advantages: larger address space, simplified data header, greater support for security and mobility. Mobile IPv6allows the mobile node keep its home address while switching network, the correspondent node uses mobile node’s home address to route its packets. The mobility is transparent for network layer and upper layers.Mobile network is opened. Current mobile IP protocol mainly solves the problem of keeping connected when mobile node switches subnet, but it lacks of security considerations. There are security risks in terms of data transmission and authentication, so the analysis and research for Mobile IPv6security is very necessary.Mobile IPv6is the core of this paper. The research is mainly about principle, communication mechanism and security mechanism of mobile IPv6which can be divided into following aspects:1. Overview of the background of IPv6and Mobile IPv6, the basic principles, protocols and features.2. The communication mechanism of Mobile IPv6, including route optimization, the binding update, neighbor discovery, route announcement, etc., analysis of how Mobile IPv6supports mobility.3. Security threats in mobile IPv6communication process and the analysis of stateful address auto-configuration problem, duplicate address detection attack, redirection attack, man-in-the-middle attack, DDos attack and other security threats.4. Overview of security mechanisms of mobile IPv6such as IPSec, AAA, and RR.5. Mobile IPv6security test, analyze the causes and suggest possible enhancements.
