Land use refers to all the activities in the development and utilization of land resources; land cover refers to the status of the Earth’s surface which has formed naturally or artificially. In each scale, land-use changes are a direct result for the land covered, and land-cover changes in turn affect land-use changes in time and space. Nearly a century, the impact of human activity on the Earth’s environment is continuously strengthened, so that the land use/land cover change, which is one of the core content of the global change, aroused widespread concern.Land use and land cover change research contains the study of global "hot spots" in vulnerable areas. In order to explore the complexity of land use and land cover change, people also research the typical regional. So we can reveal the evolution of land use and land cover dynamic mechanism in the process, avoid large-scale analysis of the surfac and have a better understanding of the trajectory and the process of land use and land cover change. These can provide a basis for the wider region. This is a series of studies that in a small and medium scale about land-use change in Zengdu District, in order to reveal the mechanisms and characteristics of the area of land use change in the theory and methods, make exploration and make reasonable proposals and decision support for local socio-economic development and environmental protection. This paper is divided into four sections, outlined as follows:The first part is the introduction. Introduces the background and significance of the research, and the latest research progress at home and abroad, and then gives a main research content and technology roadmap. The second part is a part of the theoretical basis. First introduced a series of theoretical models used in this study, including land use classification system, a variety of land-use change in the number and extent of model. Followed by detailed study using the technical methods, such as remote sensing, geographic information systems, digital image processing technology, remote sensing image interpretation, digital elevation model. The third part is the empirical research. In this section, first, based on a variety of statistical data and information, there gives the natural economic and social profile of the study of the target area and makes a detailed introduction to the local land resources utilization combined with land-use planning data. And then, the data processing, such as data sources, software support, data processing methods are discussed in detail. Finally, in the part of the results of analysis, combined with a variety of land use analysis model, there gives the land use structure, quantity and changes in circumstances at each time point of the study period. And on this basis, from the factors of the aspects of the natural environment, socio-economic, demographic, and policy analysis that caused the change, there gives the main driving force of the land use/cover change. Finally, there is the analysis about social, economic and ecological environment of land use/cover change. The fourth part is the results discussion section. First, there is an objective evaluation of the accuracy of the study. Then is a discussion of the hilly areas of land use/land cover variation and given the main countermeasures to protect land resources and ecological environment. Finally, there are some theoretical innovation of this study. The fifth part is the conclusion. First is a comprehensive overview of the main conclusions of this paper. There are some shortcomings, pointed out that in this together and put forward the future development of this area.
