To better understand differentiated regional economic growth, this study analysed factor contributions to economic growth of29provinces from2000to2009by using expanded Cobb-Douglas production function model containing labor, physical capital, institutional factors, knowledge capital and human capital, and provincial panel data. The differences in factor contributions among eastern, central and western China as well as provincial differences were further analysed. Results showed that during2000and2009, physical capital was the most important input in China’s economic growth, followed by tertiary education human capital and institutional factors whose contributions to economic growth were slightly higher than those of labor and knowledge capital. The contribution of before tertiary education human capital to economic growth was at minimum. Regional differences in factor contributions to economic growth were very significant. Contributions of labor, tertiary education human capital and knowledge capital to economic growth in eastern China were significantly higher than those in central and western China; factor contributions of institutional factors and physical capital in central and western China were higher than those in eastern China; the difference in contribution of before tertiary education human capital was small among eastern, central and western China. Among the29provinces, labor inputs in Guizhou, Yunnan, Xinjiang provinces and eastern provinces except Tianjin, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces were significantly higher than those in the other provinces; contributions of tertiary education human capital to economic growth in Fujian, Shandong. Shanghai, Zhejiang, Tianjin and Shanxi were significantly higher than those in the other provinces; knowledge capital’s contributions to economic growth in eastern provinces except Hebei, Hainan and Liaoning were higher than those in the central and western provinces; contributions of institutional factors to economic growth in eastern provinces except Hebei. Zhejiang, Shandong and Jiangsu provinces were lower than those in central and western provinces except Ningxia. Qinghai, Xinjiang and Shanxi; contributions of before tertiary education human capital to economic growth in the vast majority of provinces were low.
