Surface electromagnetic wave is confined to a thin flat area and propagated along the planar direction. Its amplitude will be gradually attenuated with the increase of deviation plane distance in the direction perpendicular to the plane. It has so many potential applications in many fields, such as:optical waveguide, optical filters, optical excitation, data storage and so on. With the rapid development of photoelectric materials, the surface waves, which are in periodic layered media, have become more and more researchers’attention. At present, its dispersion curves and some of the light intensity distribution are obtained, and the effect of varying the thickness of the termination layer has been measured experimentally. However, research report of the specific effects (function relations), which are about the relevant structure parameters to surface wave, is less. Based on the research background of the research group, a further study of surface wave, which are in the one-dimension semi-infinite photonic crystal system, has done in this paper. The main research work and innovation are as follows:1. The current research status of photonic crystal materials is reviewed. The concept, types, characteristics and applications of surface wave are emphatically expounded.2. Starting from the theory of electromagnetic wave, the transfer matrix is deduced, when electromagnetic wave propagates in periodic layered media. The dispersion relation of surface wave is obtained, when the transfer matrix is applied to the system of one dimensional semi-infinite photonic crystal. Taking the lead in using some approximation method, some key parameters in the dispersion relations are changed from the implicit into the explicit, so the relationship between them can be observed clearly.3. The characteristics of surface wave dispersion curve and its graphical method are analyzed. The critical layer thickness when the surface wave ends is obtained. We have found that:The adjacent difference between these values of the critical layer thickness for the frequency surface wave is a constant. The constant is different for different frequency surface wave.4. By computer programming simulation of the dispersion curve and the approximate curve of the surface wave, the validity of the approximate expression is proved, the scope of application and the error analysis of the approximate expression are obtained, and the specific effects of the critical layer thickness affecting the surface wave are discussed. It can be conclude that the other cycles have similar results.Through the work of this paper, a more in-depth understanding of surface wave would be had in the system of one-dimension semi-infinite photonic crystals. It will be an important guiding significance for the theory research design and practical application of surface wave.
