Lightning location records were comprehensively compared with the high-resolution observation of2007-2012triggered lightning experiment in Guangzhou and the2009-2012natural lightning on high structures observation experiment in Guangzhou, to evaluate the Data validity of the Lightning Location System of Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao, then the detection efficiency and the detection precision were also analyzed objectively. The differences between the center area and the whole detection area, and also before and after the lightning location network upgrade, were studied using grid method and statistical method of lightning parameters, to find out the influence of lightning detection network on the data consistence. The results show that:(1) The flash detection efficiency and stroke detection efficiency were about83%(83/100) and61%(168/277) respectively. The arithmetic mean value and geometrical mean value for location error was estimated to be about1730m and730m (134samples).(2) LLS-reported peak currents of triggered lightning records were about30%lower than the truth during2008-2012, while300%higher in2012.(3) The monthly distribution of C-G strokes was concentrated in April to September, which tallied better with that of the precipitation in south china. The high value of positive C-G strokes percentages was mostly concentrated in the center area of Pearl River Delta, wherein the higher C-G stroke density but relative lower mean C-C stroke peak current amplitude was found than the surrounding area(4) When the number of detection sub-station was significantly increased in2012, the detection scope and location precision were found to be obviously improved, but the peak currents of return strokes were systematically overestimated. We also found that the lightning detection ability will need improve in the surrounding areas where far away from the center of Pearl River Delta.
