Lightning damage is one of the three major factors that seriously affect the safety ofChina’s power grid operation. In the power system, lightning protection is very important. Alot of protection measures used to ensure the safety of grid operation. Lightning locationsystem is currently the most effective and the most convenient means of lightningmonitoring and plays an important role in lightning monitoring, early warning, and lightningprotection. With the rapid development of the power grid, to strengthen the lightningmonitoring and protection, reduce lightning damage, guarantee power system security, as anecessary prerequisite and strong guarantee for building a strong grid.In order to further improve the performance of lightning location system andapplication, this study investigated the lightning detection technology of different method,analyzed the characteristics of lightning electromagnetic field, flash back characteristics.Combined with modern digital signal processing technology, the project proposed thelightning electromagnetic waves FPGA-based LF/VLF signals floating-point signalprocessing method and applied to the digital lightning detection system.After several thunderstorms, the subject to obtain a large of monitoring data, laboratorydata and field run data, and these data were analyzed. The data analysis mainly includes asignal detection performance, the synchronization of the reception rate, time synchronizationmismatch, etc. The data analysis showed that significantly enhance the overall performanceof the application of floating-point arithmetic model digital lightning detection stations.Including doubling time synchronization accuracy, single station detection efficiency isincreased by20%, and efficient detection radius expand, multi-station receiver efficiency by66%up to85%, system detection efficiency from85%to94%. I believe that with theconstant improvement of the system, the system further improvement in overall.
