2,3-butanediol, which is widely used in industrial application, is a very important biobased chemical. It has been shown to have potential applications in the manufacture of printing inks, perfumes, fumigants, moistening and softening agents, explosives and plasticizers, and as a carrier for pharmaceuticals. Given the scarcity of fossil fuel supplies, the bio-based process is receiving a more and more significant interest. Here we studied the medium used for2,3-butanediol production by Serratia marcescens. The details were introduced as following:Firstly, the characterization of2,3-butanediol production by Serratia marcescens was investigated. It showed that the new strain was positive beccause of low concentration of by-product, and little product of bubble. Based on former results of fermentation using CSLP as nutrigen resource, the concentration of medium components was optimized in shake flask fermentations using single factor, Plackett-Burman design and Response Surface methodology. Fed-batch experiments in3.71fermentor showed2,3-butanediol concentration of128.28g/L was obtained. Then, Based on previous research, it was established that microbial biomass was recycleing used for2,3-butanediol production. It not only cuts down some cost of fermentative medium, but also benefits for the enviornmental protection. Fed-batch experiments in3.71fermentor showed that2,3-butanediol concentration of128.28g/L was obtained. Finally, the elementary study on glycerol and starch used by Serratia marcescens G1was conducted. The microbe’s growth was restrained when the concentration of glycerol was higher than50g/1and2,3-butanediol concentration of8.43g/1was obtained. The starch could be utilized directly by Serratia marcescens G1, while the speed of hydrolysis was very week, acetoin concentration of4.20g/1was obtained and2,3-butanediol was not be detected.
