In recent years, negative refractive index materials are subjected to the attention of the researchers with its unique characters. With the explorement of the negative index materials, it has attractive prospects in the field of optical engineering. Firstly, optical properties of negative refractive index materials and its classification are introduced in this paper. Then a comparison of characters is made between a conventional lens and a single lens made by negative refractive index materials. As a conclusion, spherical aberrations can be corrected by a single lens made by negative refractive index materials. Finally, laser expanding optical systems with negative refractive index materials are simulated and analysized. The results show that spherical aberrations in optical system with the lens made by negative refractive index materials are much smaller than that in conventional system, which can improve the beam quality of the laser beam significantly.
