In China, the source of the rice straw is widespread and the quantity is huge. Itsdegradation and transformation into renewable energy by microorganisms have greatpractical significance in solving the environmental pollution and energy crisis. In thedegradation of rice straw, a major obstacle to exploit rice straw is the durability oflignin. In recent years, exploring new microbial resources which have the ability todegrade lignin of rice straw is a hotspot. Due to the immense environmentaladaptability and biochemical versatility of endophytic bacteria, developingendophytic bacterial resources could lead us to a new area of degradation. In this study, we isolated endophytes from indigenous rice growth in Changsha byoptimizing surface-sterilized method and obtained212endophytes. For futher study,we screened an endophytic bacterial strain Sd-1which can be used to degrade ligninand rice straw. This strain was isolated from rice seeds by optimiz ingsurface-sterilized method. Combining the cultural charactristics, morphologicalcharacteristics and16S rDNA of the bacteria, we can find that Sd-1belongs toPantoea sp. It is shown that Pantoea sp. Sd-1exhibits an exceptional ability todegradate rice straw and lignin. In medium which contains rice straw or kraft ligninsupplemented with1%glucose and0.5%peptone, Pantoea sp. Sd-1can effectivelyreduce the rice straw weight by54.51%after6days treatment. The strain is alsocapable of reducing the lignin colour (52.38%) and the content (69.06%) after4daysof incubation. This paper explored the efficient method of isolating endophytes from rice andscreened an endophytic bacteria Sd-1which can be used to degrade lignin and ricestraw. Meanwhile, we also analyzed the ability to degradate rice straw and lignin. Thispaper laid the foundation for the biodegradation of rice straw by endophytic bacteria.
