Wave Glider as a novel kind of Autonomous Observation Vehicle consists of a surfacemother-boat and a wave-propelled sub, which connected with each other by a tether. Thevehicle can directly convert the wave heaving into forward propulsion, and can implementlong-duration and further-voyage ocean observing missions without providing extra power. With wave fluctuation, the oscillating NACA-type hydrofoils of the wave-powered sub aresubjected to hydro resistance and forward thrust. The thrust exerted on the hydrofoilspropels the sub.The operation principle of the two-part architecture of Wave Glider is analyzed anddesign requirements of each part are respectively presented in this paper. The Wave Gliderinvolved in this paper has been successfully experienced sea trials to demonstrate thefeasibility of its architecture; the hydrodynamic characteristics of the key parameters of thesub are analyzed by using of the simulation function of FLUENT software; Kane equationsare applied to obtain dynamic model; Kinematic simulation analysis of Wave Glider aredisplayed by using of MATLAB software.Main research achievements:1. The operation principle of the two-part architecture of Wave Glider is analyzed andits configuration is proposed; the structure feasibility of Wave Glider is demonstratedthrough sea trials.2. Hydrodynamic characteristics of the hydrofoil type, the spacing between eachhydrofoils and the inclination of the hydrofoils are analyzed by using of FLUENT software. The changing regulations of hydrodynamic performance are summarized when the keyparameters are adjusted. Thus, theory reference is provided for further research on optimaldesign of Wave Glider.3. Qualitative Analysis of the operation principle of fluid structure interaction of WaveGlider are presented; then the dynamic model of Wave Glider are established; and thenMATLAB software are used to complete the kinematic simulation analysis, which canvisually display the motion state of the surface mother-boat, the wave-propelled sub as wellas the whole vehicle.
