Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) or electron spin resonance (ESR) spec-troscopy is a technique for studying materials with unpaired electrons. The basic con-cepts of EPR are analogous to those of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), but it is electron spins that are excited instead of the spins of atomic nuclei. As electron spins have much higher gyromagnetic ratio than atomic nuclei, in a external magnetic field with same strength, EPR requires much higher resonant frequency than NMR.ERP spectrometer is a kind of instrument based on EPR theory. There are several commercial solutions available. However, during our research, we found that commer-cial solutions cannot meet the requirement of deeper research. A project of building a homebuilt EPR spectrometer has been started, and a prototype has been presented at2011. Based on the prototype, we have made deeper investigation of EPR spectrometer and done several related work:· We have improved current prototype, especially its microwave bridge, power sup-ply and controllers. The prototype has been reconstructed to work alone without supplementary instrument, as a complete EPR spectrometer which can work un-der laboratory environment.· We have made detailed and systematic analysis and optimization of the EPR spec-trometer, thus to improve the overall performance. Unpredicted phenomenons are also discussed. Based on these work, improvement suggestions and redesign roadmaps of several parts are carried out.· We have given introduction of related research of homebuilt spectrometer.
