The system of population, farmland, and food has significant impacts on bothChina’s economic growth and social development. In order to further promote asustainable development of the economy, it is very crucial to secure a balanceddevelopment of this system. Through Wavelet analyzing the periodical regularity ofpopulation size, cultivated land area, and the total food production of thirty-oneprovinces of China, the purpose of the study is to look at the current situation of thissystem; make conclusions based on the spatial-overlay analysis; and developing andvisualizing the model. Results of this study shows that:(1) Due to the influence of various factors, from north to south, the distributionpattern of the system has a descending trend on primary cycle.(2) Province of Jiangsu, Anhui, and Jiangxi present a balanced development onpopulation-farmland-food system. On the contrary, City of Chongqing and GuangdongProvince have a system of unbalanced development, making them short-cycle areas.(3) Long-cycle areas are rich in cultivated lands, high-yield in food, coordinatedwith population growth, and rapidly developing in agriculture. The short-cycle areaspresents features the other way around.(4) There are non-linear relationships between population, farmland, and food, which indicates a non-linear regression model can be developed. Links and causalitymake the three factors check and promote each otherThis study takes advantage of the multi-scale character of wavelet analysis toanalyze the fluctuation pattern of the system. From both the perspective of time andspace, to grasp the temporal and spatial regularity of the system. The introduction ofnew method, to some extent, broadens the view of the study, which has a far-reachingmeaning.
