Abrasive water jet(AWJ) is a new technology for the rapid development in recentdecades, whose characteristics of cold cutting and single-point machining is extremelysuperior to any other special processing method. Thermoplastic engineering plastic hasbeen widely used in recent years for its excellent properties, as the increase of its usageamount the machining demand because of molding technology of the plastic has beenunable to meet the processing requirements. There are many shortcomings forthermoplastic engineering plastic in mechanical processing due to the particularity of theirthermal and mechanical properties, while the advantage of abrasive waterjet cold singlepoint machining can just solve these problems. This paper mainly study the influence thatmaterial removal style of thermoplastic engineering plastic and process parameters oneffect of processing during the process of abrasive waterjet cutting through the experimentmethod, as follows:(1) Combining with the research of other scholars on the removal mechanism ofplastic materials with abrasive waterjet machining, pure water jet and abrasive water jetcutting experiments are conducted based on thermoplastic engineering plastic in this paper,and summarized the material removal style by the experimental phenomenon briefly.(2) In this paper the maximum cutting depth as an index of measuring cuttingefficiency, the surface roughness and kerf taper as an index of measuring cutting quality, asingle factor experiment method is used to investigate the effects of processing parametersthat nozzle traverse speed, pump pressure, abrasive flow rate and the target distance, alsoanalyze the reasons.(3) Combining the BP neural network and genetic algorithm to build the predictionmodel of thermoplastic engineering plastic abrasive waterjet cutting processing effect,presenting a new multi-objective optimization method and using the prediction with modelgenetic algorithm to optimize process parameters.This paper aims to play a guiding role in the actual production and processing.
