With the advancement of industrial technologies, most paper manufacturingfactories have been upgrading their paper reelers whose breadth is becomingwider and whose speed is becoming higher.However, the web inspection still depends on manual operation, which leadsto low efficiency, high cost and careless omission. To resolve such a problem, theauthor designs a fully automatic web inspection system, integrating computertechnology, automation technology and image processing technology. Thissystem can scan paper in a real-time manner and automatically inspect andclassify the paper problems.First, this paper introduces the line-scanning camera based automatic onlineweb inspection system. In accordance with the functional and technicalrequirements, the speed of the reeler can be detected by the optical-electricalencoder. Then, the speed is transformed to a corresponding frequency, which canbe used by the frequency signal generator to drive the line-scanning camera. Inthis way, the system can detect the paper and locate the problem spots in areal-time manner. The image collecting computer will then collect the paperimages, preprocess the images, and save them in the local disks. The system iscomposed of four parts: the camera holder and the lamp holder, the control circuit,the industrial control computers that acquires the images, and the monitoringstation that processes the images.Second, the DSP chip TMS320F2812based controlling and driving circuit isintroduced. The hardware circuit is mainly composed of four functional modules:the speed detection module, the camera driving module, the lamp holdercontrolling module, and the communication circuit module.Third, the control circuit and the image acquisition computers are introduced.The programs in the control circuit are written by CCS3.3, including AD9833initialization program, the lamp holder controlling program, and the RS485communication protocol. The image acquisition programs are written byVC++6.0, including the image acquisition program, image preprocessingprogram, image saving program, network communication program and serial communication program.Finally, the debugging and running conditions of the system are introduced.Detailed analysis of the problems that occurred in the debugging process is given.In addition, the images of paper problems found in the running processes aredisplayed.After6-month locale experiments and debugging, this system is confirmedto be able to meet various functional requirements. As a new type of webinspection system, it can totally replace manual operation. While lowering theproduction cost, it can also improve the efficiency and reliability.
