Mesophase pitch is composed of various flat shape aromatic hydrocarbonpolymer whose molecular weight scatter from370to2000.Carbonaceous mesophaseis the intermediate liquid crystal phase transition to solid char state. Owing to lowprice, wide raw material sources and excellent performance mesophase pitch has beenused to manufacture many kinds of advanced carbon materials, such as: carbon fiber,activated carbon, needle coke. These high-grade materials have played important rolein daily life, industry and national defense. Therefore it is significant to investigate thepreparation and application for excellent mesophase pitch.In this paper mesophase pitch was synthesized by coal-tar pitch. The influence ofthermal polymerization temperature and time on content and optical microstructurehas been studied. The reaction mechanism was investigated and the optimum reactionconditions were obtained.The results indicated that: Under certain conditions, excellent mesophase pitchcan be synthesized with low temperature, long time or high temperature, short time.Under the conditions of360℃,5h, the mesophase sphere prepared by thermalpolymerization are dispersed, while the mesophase sphere prepared under theconditions of380℃,3h are concentrated.Research shows that the optimum reaction conditions are temperature of380℃,time of3h.In the paper, mesophase pitch was synthesized by coal tar pitch. A new route topreparation of new type carbon materials is discovered. It’s important for thecomprehensive utilization of coal resources.
