Ceramic corundum abrasive is a type of new corundum abrasive prepared bysol-gel method, because the every abrasive particle is made of numbers of micron ornanoscale grains, there are many characteristics which are different with thetraditional fused corundum abrasives such as the microstructure and the properties.The properties include good self-sharpening, higher grinding efficiency, machiningprecision and longer service life. The application of the abrasive is becoming moreand more widely. Reducing production cost and improving its performance has beenthe goal of research. The experiments using the sol-gel prepared ceramic corundumabrasives to explore the effects of the new additive systems BaO(CaO)-B2O3-SiO2andCaO-B2O3-SiO2on corundum ceramic abrasive performance. Three aspects in thesystems to be explored about the influence on the mechanical strength andmicrostructure of the corundum abrasive respectively on the ratio of additives, theamount of additives added and the sintering temperature. In the experiments, undercertain process conditions and adding the appropriate amount of the appropriateproportion of the additives, the purpose is to lower the corundum abrasive sinteringtemperature and obtain the fine grain structure.Experimental results show that the additives produce a certain influence on theperformance of the ceramic corundum abrasive. In BaO(CaO)-B2O3-SiO2system,BaO:B2O3:SiO2=12:3:85, the single particle compressive strength reach the maximumvalue47.4N under the sintering temperature1300℃; In CaO-B2O3-SiO2system, thesingle particle compressive strength value is31.1N which is the best strength valueunder CaO:B2O3:SiO2=16:4:80under the condition of1300℃, the right amount ofadditives in BaO(CaO)-B2O3-SiO2system, it is2%, while the CaO-B2O3-SiO2system is3%,the two systems sintering temperatures are1400°C. Under the sintering temperature,in BaO(CaO)-B2O3-SiO2system, the single particle compressive strength value is65.4N; inCaO-B2O3-SiO2system, the single particle compressive strength value is49.7N.
