Automobile lightweight body has become an important development trend ofmodern vehicles because of the energy shortage. It is a main way to lightweightvehicle body for using high performance lightweight materials, such as aluminum, magnesium alloy, composite materials, etc.. Rivet-bonding joining is one of theeffective means to solve these lightweight material connections. A new rivet-bondingjoining process—single-sided piercing rivet-bonding (SSPR-B) process, which wasproposed by Tianjin University in recent years, can guarantee the least damage of theadhesive bonding. On the basis of physics experiment, stress distributions of SSPR-Bjoints under the shear loading were studied by using finite element method.Achievements of this thesis provide a theoretical reference for the reasonabledetermining the process parameters of SSPR-B. Achievements are as follows:(1)The finite element analysis model, which was used for stress analysis ofSSPR-B under the shear loading has been established based on the ABAQUSsoftware. The physic experiments were carried out to validate the finite elementmodel.(2)The influences of self-piercing riveting (SPR) and SSPR on properties ofadhesive bonding were analyzed. Results show that damage of the adhesive bondingby SSPR is much less than that by SPR.(3)Effects of lap length on stress distribution of the SSPR-B joints werediscussed. Results show that the joint strength increases with increasing the lap length. But it has a weak effect on the joint performance when the lap length reaches a certainmagnitude.(4)Effects of riveting direction on stress distribution of the SSPR-B jointshave been studied. Result shows that the riveting direction on the strength of joint isvery small. Therefore, the riveting direction of U-shaped rivet can be arrangedaccording to specific engineering convenience in practical application.(5)Effects of spew fillet, elastic modulus of the adhesive material, as well asthe elastic modulus of the joined plates on stress distribution were analyzed. Resultsshow that spew fillet can improve the load bearing ability of the SSPR-B joints. The stress peak values of the bonding decrease with decreasing the elastic modulus ofadhesive, and the stress distribution in the adhesive layer tends to be uniform. Thestress peak values of the bonding decrease with increasing the elastic modulus of thejoined plates, and the stress distribution in the adhesive layer tends to be uniform.
