Chemical process intensification is an effective way to solve the problems of high resource consumption, high pollution and high cost. It is an important mean to achieve process intensification through improving equipment. Micro-impinging stream reactor (MISR) is a new type of process intensification reactor. It has some unique advantages. MISR can be assembled easily so that it may be implemented both in the laboratory and, with straightforward modification, on manufacturing scale. MISR has also features of larger heat transfer coefficient and better micro-mixing performance.In this work, MISR was characterized by three measures:(1) micro-mixing efficiency, based on the Villermaux-Dushman reaction was studied. Experimental results demonstrated that the micro-mixing efficiency was improved by increasing inlet diameter in the same reaction chamber. Outlet configuration also had a great influence on the segregation. But the outlet length had little effects on the micro-mixing efficiency.(2) confirm the flow pattern which can form the impinging stream through micro-mixing time. In our study, three methods were adopted to calculate the micro-mixing time. Based on the incorporation model, the micro-mixing time ranged from0.1to5ms. At last, based on the definition of micro-mixing time, in the MISR-0.6-3.6reactor, when the Reynolds number is higher than1000, the flow pattern can form the impinging stream.(3) particle size, based on the precipitation reaction of nano barium sulfate was researched. The effects of the operating parameters and geometric parameters on the particle size agreed well with the results of Villermaux-Dushman reaction. In MIJR, the particle size was about40nm and the dispersion was better.The MISR with great micro-mixing, has a good application prospect.
