Stabilization of materials and evenness of chemical constituent in production are of vital importance in modern large-scale enterprise. Yet, the approach of real-time monitoring on constituents of materials during cigarette production has not been established. Actually, the success of NIRS (Near infrared spectroscopy) online quality monitoring on pharmaceutical research, food exploitation, petrochemical industry etc. leads to the feasibility of solving the problem.In this study, an online NIR analytical monitoring network was designed according to the processing characteristics of cut tobacco production, involving five monitoring points of the three key stages as burley baking, inflated cut leaves in carbon dioxide, and product finishing. The robust NIR models were developed upon related chemical and physical indices respectively, on the basis of researching the relationship between on-line NIRS and the14kinds of physical and chemical properties. The online NIR models of reducing sugar, potassium, chlorine, total nitrogen, total sugar, total nicotine, tobacco moisture were built, and their SEP are0.392%,0.05%,0.015%,0.348%,0.023%,0.035%,0.108%, successively and less than or close to the tolerance of China tobacco industry standard test methods. The NIR models of pH, ammonium, volatile alkali as well as material mixing ratio were firstly established. Their SPEs are0.05%,0.002%,0.006%, respectively and less than or close to the China tobacco industry standard test methods. The SEPs of online NIR models for material mixing ratio are below2.7%.The online NIR models have been applied in monitoring the qualities of tobacco in production process. Homogenization of tobaccos in process was improved by using the analytical results of online NIR through the web.Using the Online NIR quality monitoring technique in cigarette production, not only reagents and materials can be saved but also the time of collecting data and statistics shortened, as well as the detecting efficiency improved.
