Hydantoin is a five-membered saturated heterocyclic compound which contains the nitrogen atom. It is the core structure of some drugs. Hydantoin and its derivatives are usually used in antibacterial, pharmaceutical, biological inhibitors, and biological enzyme catalysis, etc.A synthesis with5,5-dimethyl hydantoin and formaldehyde as materials and strong acid as catalysis to synthesized1,1’-methylene-bis (5,5-dimethyl hydantoin) and3,3’-dimethylol-1,1’-methylene-bis(5,5-dimethyl hydantoin) was reported, and the effect of acidity and metal ions on the synthesis was discussed. IR,1H NMR,13C NMR, M S and X-ray single crystal diffraction were used to characterize the structure of products. DSC thermal analysis was used to investigate the thermal stability of products. The results show that it is the No.1nitrogen atom in5,5-dimethyl hydantoin that connects the methylene. X-ray diffraction results show that1,1’-methylene-bis(5,5-dimethyl hydantoin) belongs to orthorhombic crystal system with Aba2space group symmetry. The crystallographic parameters were listed as follows:a/A=16.584(3), b/A=9.7471(15), c/A=8.9626(14), α/(’)=90.00, β/(’)=90.00, γ/(’)=90.00, V/A3=1448.7(4) R=0.0230. And3,3’-dimethylol-1,1’-methylene-bis(5,5-dimethyl hydantoin) belongs to triclinic system with P-1space group symmetry. The crystallographic parameters were listedas follows:a/A=9.081(4),b/A=9.310(5),c/A=10.434(5), α(’)=91.324(6)β(’)=104.052(6) γ(’)=111.430(5),V/A3=790.4(7),R=0.0667.Besides,as catalysis,Na+,K+, Mn2+,and Zn2+salt increase yield by4-5times in10hours.
