Research On Competency Model For The Foreman In Coal Mine

The foreman as a leading man who works in the Production on the long-term, whichtheir personal qualities and abilities have a closely related whit miners unsafe behaviorcontrol and accident prevention.Therefore, a study of the competency model for foremen toimprove their safety competencies and management level has a profound and far-reachingsignificance for the betterment of the safe production activities.In the study, firstly, a literature review approach was adopted and then by analyzing theliterature six categories of foremen’s competencies were concluded, based on which,12foremen from the more-than-qualified group and qualified group were selected for interviewsabout some key events. By encoding the entries for the competencies,18factors ofcompetencies for foremen were summarized. Secondly, using item analysis confirmed thefactors of competencies of foremen by collecting questionnaires, SPSS16.0was adopted toconduct an exploratory factor analysis of the data collected from the questionnaires. Theconclusion showed that the competencies of foremen were divided into5determinants: thefirst one being the safety practice ability, that is the ability to handle emergencies, workprudently, recognize the potential accidents and abide by rules and regulations; the secondone the interpersonal cooperative ability, ability to encourage, deal with affairs calmly, showconcern to his subordinates and communicate; the third one the self-development ability, theability to act as a role model for mastering safety knowledge and skills and to learncontinuously; the fourth one the management ability for a team, the ability to coach, managein a human way and teamwork; the last one being professional qualities, that is professionalethics, responsibility and self-confidence.Thirdly, according to the result of the exploratoryanalysis, the competencies model for foremen was constructed. Based on the data from thesecond questionnaire, the software AMOS7.0was applied to do a confirmatory factor analysis of the correlated factors model and the second-order model. The result indicated that themodel fitting indicators are within an acceptable extent, which meant confirmatory data fitsthe model very well and proved the reasonableness of the constructed model. At last,according to the competencies model of foremen, the improvement of security managementmeasures of the coal mine foreman are proposed.In this study, the competencies model of foremen was constructed and analyzed, andbased on that, the security management measures that based on the competence of foremenwere discussed. The study has provided a theoretical basis and guide of practice for enhancingthe management level of the safety and preventing production accidents in the coal mines.
