Research On Protection And The Traditional Producing Process Of Mashu Red Wool Felt Of Qiaojia County In Yunnan Province

Felt is made of animal hair by dampness, heating and pressure, which is regarded byhuman beings as one of the important products to protect from coldness. Mashu red felt is afolk handcrafts which specifically made in Mashu town of Qiaojia County in Yunnan Province.It has a reputation of long history, fine products and durability. Red felt is an artistic miraclethat ever been found in Northeastern red land in Yunnan. Little research of red felt has beendone due to many reasons so far. Nobody has ever conducted a comprehensive and deepresearch on its craftsmanship process and values. With the development of market economy,the usage rates of Mashu red felt is declining. People who used to engage in red felt craft havegradually retreated from their craftsmanship stage, and few people have inherited thistechnique. This art is endangered.On the purpose of protecting this handcraft, this article hasshowed a comprehensive and systematic research on red felt, and has digged into itsdeveloping history. It has also reviewed and researched its traditional craftsmanship, andfurther probed into the methods of inheritance and preservation. This dissertation is donethrough huge reference to ancient books and records as well as archaeological materials. Theauthor has investigated in the field and villages to obtain and collect information. The systemof the dissertation consists of five parts:Mashu red felt historical development, traditionalcraftsmanship, uniqueness of this handcraft, inheritance and protection. Tentative explorationover Mashu red felt historic origin was done through interviews of people who produce redfelt and their family tree. In an angle of scientific history, detailed studies are put on itscraftsmanship process. Put forward a proposal to guide and support by the government.
