Steel ring is the key component of ring spinning frame, and it makes up a friction pair with the high-speed traveler to realize twisting and winding. Steel ring plays a pivotal role in the process of ring spinning yarn:from a narrower perspective, its performance directly affect the yarn quality like Yarn hairiness and broken ends of the spun yarn and spinning efficiency; from a broader perspective, it is one of the key technical issues for ring spinning frame to transform from low speed to todays high speed for realizing high-speed production of ring spinning frame.The paper introduces the traditional heat treatment and surface treatment process of steel ring. Through the analisis,the article presents diamond-like carbon(DLC) can be deposited on steel ring’s surface by mid-frequency unbalanced magnetron sputtering system to improve its wear resistance and extend its life span. Because of its excellent friction-reduction and anti-wear properties, DLC films have been widely applied in tribological field. The DLC films prepared in this research have smooth and uniform surface, higher hardness,friction coefficient as low as0.1~0.15and small wear rate. Compared with the chromium plated steel ring,the steel ring with DLC films has better performance, which achieves the desired effect of this research.In the process of this research,firstly the samples were heat treated. The heat treatment process is the same as the one used in the factory. The qunching temperature is845℃,qunching time20minutes and the temper temperature is160℃temper time2hours. After the heat treatment, the hardness is60HRC.After the heat treatment, DLC was deposited on the sample’s surface by magnetron sputtering system, which is the main work of the research. The first step is to find the appropriate process parameters. To obtain coating films that have DLC structure.the power and negative bias are changed which affect the films structure. The DLC films with different structure and performance were obtained when the power is2kW、4kW、8kW and10kW, negative bias is40V、80V、120V and160V. To ensure the final coating parameters,the mechanical property and tribology performance by different power and negative bias were compared. Finally the power of8kW and negative bias of120V were choosed as the coating films process parameters.To prove whether the DLC films have better tribology performance than the traditional surface treatment process of steel ring,the friction and wear properties of DLC films sample, chrome Plated sample and matrix sample were studied and compared. The tests of the friction and wear properties was carried out on pin-disk wear tester. The friction and wear properties were compared when the frequency is4Hz、6Hz、8Hz、10H、12Hz and the load is4.9N、7.84N、9.8N、11.76N. The results of the sdudy show that at different frequencies,the friction coefficient of DLC films sample is between0.08to0.15,but the friction coefficient of chrome Plated sample is between0.4to0.75and that of matrix sample is between0.4to0.7. At various loads the friction coefficient of DLC films sample is still lower,which is between0.075to0.15,but the friction coefficient of chrome Plated sample is between0.43to0.72and that of matrix sample is between0.45to0.75. As far as the wear rate,compared to chrome Plated sample and matrix sample,DLC films has smaller wear rate at different frequencies and various loads. And the wear rates of DLC films change in a smaller range and the wear state is stable.
