Edge preparation is indispensable to cutting tool design and manufacture. Particularly, itinfluences severely to the performance of carbide cutting tools. Intensive studies concernedwith edge preparation method for different material and condition are under way. Generally,round nose edge is the most favorite adoption. Other kinds of preparation methods are alsoapplied successively in different cases. Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center ofDalian Polytechnic University investigated the edge preparation with inclined surface andachieved prospective results. This kind of method is scarcely reported in the literature.This thesis reports the work done in the inclined cutting edge preparation and applications withcontents as in the following: preparation equipment; influences of preparation parameters to thrust, torque,and chip evacuation under different condition of cutting material and cutting parameters; determination ofthe appropriate preparation parameters. Experiment results verify the effectiveness of the proposed methodand adopted parameters. This method has been successfully applied in Dalian Diesel Plant. Tool-life of thedrilling has been increased by more than20%.
