LY12aluminum alloys belonging to Al-Cu-Mg system possess extensive application inmany industries, especially in aviation and space industries, owing to low specific gravity andhigh strength-to-weight ratio. However, an obstacle to their further applications lies in their lowwear resistance and low corrosion resistance which make them prone to oxidation and corrosionin humid atmosphere, fresh water, sea water, most of organic acids and their salts, and inorganicacids and their salts. With the purpose of providing corrosion properties to overcome theshortcomings of aluminum and its alloys, surface modified technique can offer a possibility ofwidening their applications where high wear resistance and low density are required.LY12is oneof duralumin which has widely applications in aviation and space industries, and has been widelyinvestigated to improve its corrosion resistance.Different solid solution ageing treatment processing LY12aluminum alloy specimens cangain different results, the results showed that:LY12alminum alloy specimens that processed bysolution and aging treatment with the technological parameters solid solution temperature495℃, aging temperature185℃, aging time10h have the best micostructure, wear resistance andcorrosion resistance; LY12aluminum alloy specimens are irradiated by HCPEB under twoaccelerating voltages of23.4kv and27kv, respectively. It can be concluded that under sameenergy state, with the increase of HCPEB pulses, the number of melting craters decreases as wellas the diameter of the craters gets bigger. The specimens irradiated by HCPEB have the betterwear resistance and corrosion resistance than the matrix; The LY12aluminum alloy specimensafter solution and ageing treatment and then irradiated by HCPEB have the better properties thanthose only irradiated by HCPEB.The surface miocrostructure is flatter and the alloying elementis more well-distributed. Electrochemical corrosion experiments show that samples5-27-25afterHCPEB irradiation exhibit a remarkable enhancement of corrosion resistance property, e.g. thecorrosion potential (Ecorr) increased from-626.9mV to-523.3mV, as well as the corrosioncurrent (Icorr) decreased sharply by2orders of magnitude.
