In this dissertation, a novel asymmetrical indium chloride mono-hydroxyethoxy phthalocyanine was synthesized by a cross-condensation reaction of two different phthalonitriles. Using2-chloropropionyl chloride end-capped indium chloride mono-hydroxyethoxy phthalocyanine as initiator, CuCl/PMDETA as the catalyst system, a new linear indiumphthalocyanine-end-functionalized polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. The structures of the initiator and the polymers were characterized by means of fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The study on the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectra of the initiator and the polymers indicated that the absorption peaks in Q-band were observed to occur blue shift with increasing the electron withdrawing ability of substituents.Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the linear polymer obtained by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) showed that the molecular weight distribution was narrow and the molecular weight distribution range was between1.11and1.18. Meanwhile, the polymerization reaction had a good controllability.By Z-scan method, nonlinear optical properties of the prepared initiator and polymer samples were tested. A frequency-doubled Q switched Nd:YAG laser system with ps laser pulse was used for studying nonlinear optical limiting properties of the synthesized initiator and polymers at a wavelength of532nm with21ps pulses. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility (x(3)) of the initiator and the polymer was6.0×10-10esu and1.0×10-10esu, respectively.
