The present paper elaborated the characteristics of chlordane such as the composition, physical and chemical properties, toxicity, the presence and behavior in environmental media. It also detailed the research progress in analysis methods of chlordane and other organochlorine pesticides in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Union and China. In addition, environmental monitoring methods were summarized for chlordane and other organochlorine pesticides, including extraction, purification and detection. The extraction technology generally contains Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic extraction, accelerated solvent extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, matrix solid phase dispersion, while sample purification mainly includes liquid extraction, solid phase extraction and solid phase micro-extraction method. Gas chromatography, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, thin-layer chromatography and enzyme immunoassay method are illustrated in detecting method part. Residue standards of chlordane and other organochlorine pesticides in various environmental media were also introduced.Based on the comparisons of various analysis methods for chlordane, the study investigated the concentrations of particulate and gaseous α-and γ-chlordane in the atmosphere in Dalian using current quality control system. The results showed that seasonal changes significantly affected the concentrations of gaseous chlordane. Both gaseous α-and γ-chlordane concentrations were notably higher in summer and autumn than in spring and winter, probably due to the secondary volatile in high temperature at the background of chlordane forbidden use. However, no significant response was observed in particulate α-chlordane. For particulate γ-chlordane, higher levels were observed in autumn and winter owing to dust weather in Dalian.
