With the rapid development of national economy, more and more dyes are usedin textile, paper, leather, building, chemical and many other industries. Theenvironmental pollution produced by the process of production and use dyes alsogrows day by day. As many dye molecules have complex and stable structures withazo bond, aromatic ring and color group, dye wastewater has high chroma, highconcentration, complex composition and low bioavailability, which make it become amajor issue in the field of wastewater treatment at present. In the numerous watertreatment methods, adsorption process is one of most effective treatment methods ofthis kind of wastewater. Therefore, the development of new and effective adsorbentsbecomes the key factor of continuously promoting the development and application ofadsorption process to solve the problem of dye wastewater. Titanium and itscompounds have broad application in various industries including aerospace, militaryand many other industries due to their excellent performance. It also has a broadapplication prospect in wastewater treatment. At present, the research of titaniumoxide in environmental field mainly focus on the preparation and modification oftitanium dioxide, using its excellent photocatalytic activity on the degradation ofpollutants. Researches on titanium peroxide is relatively less than the former. In this paper, titanium sulfate and hydrogen peroxide were used as the main rawmaterials to develop a method of preparing titanium peroxide. The obtained materialwas characterized by a series of characterization technology including X-raydiffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) to analyze the structurecharacteristics and surface morphology. The results show that the prepared titaniumperoxide powder is a kind of amorphous mesoporous materials with lots of peroxogroups and hydroxyl groups. The material decomposed into titanium dioxide when heated to a certain temperature. The adsorption property of the prepared material wasconfirmed and evaluated by adsorption experiments of methyl orange (MO), phenoland three cationic dye including methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG) andneutral red (NR) as target pollutants. It was found that cationic dyes could beadsorbed effectively. Then the influence factors including initial concentration, temperature, pH and the molecular structure were analyzed in detail. The adsorptionwas very fast and adsorption equilibrium was reached in a very short time for all threecationic dyes while the adsorption equilibrium time increased with the increasing ofthe initial dye concentration. The adsorption kinetics of MB, MG and NR werestudied then. It was found that the adsorption data fitted perfectly with thepseudo-second-order kinetics and the saturated adsorption capacities for MB, MG andNR were224.37,251.38and327.61mg·g-1at293K and400mg·L-1, respectively.According to the adsorption thermodynamic characteristics study, the adsorptionprocess was spontaneous, coinciding with Langmuir isotherm model very well. Finally, the controlling mechanism of the adsorption process are discussed, whichcould be electrostatic adsorption on single molecule layer.
