Bio-fouling, a common biological phenomenon in nature, isundesirable in a wide range of applications, including but not limited tobiosensors, surgical devices, medical implants, food industry and marineequipment. Proteins and microbes adsorbed on a specific surface mayproduce a negative influence on, if not seriously destroy, the normalfunction of material. The optimal way to combat this problem is to endowmaterial surface with the capacity of anti-fouling. Up to now, muchprogress has been achieved by using polyethylene glycol (PEG) forproducing anti-adhesive coatings. However, the majority of them becomeinefficient in terms of surfaces with complicated morphologies and underharsh application surroundings. In this dissertation, we fabricate along-term anti-fouling coating, and a self-healing anti-fouling coating bylayer-by-layer assembly. This dissertation is composed of the followingtwo aspects:1. An antireflective coating with the capacity of long-termanti-fouling was fabricated. Polyethleneimine functionalized withpolyethylene glycol (noted as PEI-PEG) was synthesized, which wasalternately assembled with SiO2nanoparticles through layer-by-layerassembly. After cross-linking the PEI-PEG/SiO2film with glutaraldehyde,a long-term anti-fouling and antireflective coating was obtained. Such a coating can enhance the transmission of light in visible region whendeposited on quartz and glass substrates. Meanwhile, this coating caneffectively supress the adsorption of protein and microbes.2. An anti-fouling coating with self-healing ability was fabricated.PEI-PEG was layer-by-layer assembled with hyaluronic acid (HA) toproduce PEI-PEG/HA films. PEG diacid is used as a cross-linker tocross-link and stabilize the coating. The coating can heal damage such ascuts several tens of micrometer wide when immersing the coating indeionized water. Importantly, the self-healing coating has a strongcapacity to inhibit the adsorption of proteins and fibroblast cells inphysiology conditions.
