Naphthalocyanine and the most of its derivatives have a strong absorption in the near-infrared region. They possess good optical/electrical properties and biological activity, and they belong to be a kind of the functional materials.Bromination of side chain in o-xylene and its4-substituted derivatives could generate1,2-bis (dibromomethyl) benzene and the corresponding4-substituted derivatives. Fumaronitrile could be formed by dehydration reaction of fumaramide with P2O5.2,3-Dicyanonaphthalene or its corresponding6-substituted derivatives could be obtained by reaction of1,2-bis (dibromomethyl) benzene and its4-substituted derivatives with fumaronitrile in DMF. In this reaction, potassium iodide acted as a reaction reagent rather than a catalyst and the reaction mechanism was further proposed.Vanadium oxide naphthalocyanine and the corresponding substituted naphthalocyanines could be formed by reaction of2,3-dicyanonaphthalene and its derivatives with VCI3in quinoline. The vanadium oxide naphthalocyanine is nearly in soluble in normal organic solvents but the substituted naphthalocyanines are soluble. Their structures were characterized by IR and MASS. These vanadium oxide naphthalocyanines have strong absorption in the near-infrared region as expected. TGA results demonstrated that they were excellent thermal stable. Tetra-t-butyl-vanadium oxide naphthalocyanine could be well incorporated into polyacrylate, thus, a polymer with strong near-infrared absorption could be made.
